Stepping Through Time: The History of Grundy's Shoes
For over a century, Grundy’s Shoes has been a cornerstone of Adelaide’s retail scene, providing high-quality footwear and exceptional customer service. Behind its success is a rich history intertwined with one of South Australia’s pioneering shoemakers —Thomas Judd.
The Beginnings: Thomas Judd and Star Boot Manufactory
Thomas Judd emigrated as a 10 year old boy with his family from England aboard the sailing ship Taymouth Castle in 1855. In a twist of fate, Thomas tripped and broke his leg on the voyage, which was poorly set by the ship’s surgeon. Corrective shoes were not readily available in the fledging colony, so Thomas, with the help of his bootmaker uncle learnt how to make his own shoes.
In 1868, Thomas opened The Star Boot Manufactory on East Terrace and in 1889, moved to larger premises on Rundle Street. As the demand for well-made shoes grew, Judd expanded his operations, helping to shape Adelaide’s footwear industry. His dedication to quality and innovation laid the groundwork for what would later become a thriving family enterprise. Over the years the business evolved, with names you may remember, Judds, Barlows and Grundy’s.
The Acquisition of Grundy’s Shoes
In 1921, the Judd and Whittenbury families took over Grundy’s Shoes, a business that had been trading since 1896 on Rundle Street, a prime retail location in Adelaide. This move strengthened expertise in retail & complimented an already well-established business.
Our families' commitment to customer service and premium footwear helped Grundy’s Shoes thrive. Over the decades, our deep understanding of craftsmanship and footwear trends enabled us to cater to generations of customers looking for comfort, style, and durability.
A Family Legacy Continues
The connection between the Judd and Whittenbury families strengthened when Vera Judd, Thomas Judd’s granddaughter, married into the Whittenbury family. This union ensured that Grundy’s Shoes remained a family-run business, preserving its core values and dedication to quality.
Today, Grundy’s Shoes continues to operate from its original location on Rundle Street, along with stores in Glenelg, Victor Harbor and Online.
